ZZ-9 Hydraulic Roller
I'm looking into making a pretty nice setup for my Iroc, it will most likely be in a long time, but I would like to know how this sounds so I can know ahead of time before I do the build-up.
I am ditching TPI and FI altogether and going carbed. The block is the stock 88 L-98. My intake will probably be either an RPM Airgap or a Performer RPM, I will probably be going with a 750CFM Demon. I will most likely be getting AFR 195 heads. I don't know which cam I should go with. The ZZ-9 cam specs from TPIS looked pretty good to me, but I have some doubts. I've heard many people aren't satisfied with their products and it seemed like a pretty steep price for a cam ($375). My question is : what would be a good cam for my above setup? I am thinking of a Comp Cam now, but not sure what would be a good cam? I was thinking of using 1.6 roller rockers for the cam but not sure if that is too high for a cam with specs like the ZZ-9. This setup would probably see a decent amount of street time as well as a couple of Test N Tune nights. I'm not afraid of having a rough idle for the street but don't want anything that is basically unstreetable.
ZZ-9 Info:
HydraulicRoller
(Intake Exhaust duration 282/287
Duration at .050 212 226
Gross lift .483 .520
Lobe separation 112)
Thanks for any suggestions/info.

i have a simialr setup to you...my LT4 heads flow close to what the 195 AFR's do and im running a comp XR 224/230 roller....its no were near unstreetable....in fact its pretty tame actually..its lopes quite a bit at idle, strong low end and midrange and itll pull all the way to my 6,300 revlimiter...it makes peak power at 6,100
as far as TPIS's products are concerned, ive never dealt with them but from what ive heard, there products are worth the money, just there tunes arent the best...remember there name is Tuned Port Induction Specialtis so they know what there doing with these motors
i have an idle movie in my sig if you want to hear what my 224/230 sounds like....its a cold startup idle so its like 550-600 rpms'....the "in action" movie it when its warmed up

Thanks for the info, I think I might go with that (your) cam or something close to it with 1.6 roller rockers. What is your rocker ratio? That bird sounds pretty damn mean, looks pretty quick too
. Where you at in MI? When I get the Iroc built we should set something up.

Thanks for the kind words....its gets a lot of attention on the street so im always smiling driving around..im still running the stock 1.52 stamped steel rockers..
...a set of 1.6 rollers are on the christmas list aswell as a set of LS1 beehive springs...with 1.5's the XR 224 is 502/510 lift....the XE 224 is 525/535 IIRC....i chose the XR becasue the valves will stay open longer then the XE...but the XE has a little more lift...the XR will generally have a fatter flatter power curve...
im in NY right now but my ride is still in MI..send me a Pm with your number or somthing so when im back in MI well hook up or something..im down in Westland...strait down 94
BTW that burnout was in 2nd gear

Wow! What have you done to that WC T5 to get it to survive behind that engine?

The AFR heads have a relatively favorable exh/int flow ratio. You don't want a split-pattern cam with them; you'll get more out of a single-pattern one.
For street use, I'd suggest a hyd roller with .050" duration in the 230° range, peak lift near .550", lobe separation 108-110°. Both lobes about the same specs. With the relatively small ports in those heads, really high valve lifts won't do much for you, because the valve isn't the limit to the flow. Get your lift from the cam if you can, since it's within the range that's easily possible with a hyd roller, rather than from higher rocker ratio. Ditch the stock AFR valve springs, and run whatever your cam mfr tells you their cam requires.
