what to do with my engine... tbi
i currently and stuck with the *** awful tbi motor in my car, and for spring i want to upgrade, i am sick of slow the car is, and how much of a joke it is....
i dont have the money to swap a whole motor and build one up
i have a set of dynomax headers and a y pipe right now that i plan on putting on come spring
now my question is what do i do with the tbi ?
i was thinking of swaping tpi onto it, but then i was thinking that it is more or less a waste.. i wont see that much of a increase, and the tpi is still vert restrictive
the car is a 91 formula, tbi, auto
i am DEFINTETLY converting it to a t5, since i cant stand a auto car
just looking for opinions on what else to do, i was thinking a computer controlled carb setup ? or maybe just a new intake manifold.
not really sure how i want to do this. i wish i had the money to just drop a new engine into it, but i dont so that isnt a option, and i am going to have to be on a budget.

If you have a old carb that still works your best bet is to get a fuel pressure regulator and a four barrel intake manifold preferably holly high-performance this will only run around $200 but the increasing in horsepower well be worth it

Emissions requirements has to be the first question answered.
On the TBI forum, there are stickies that basically answer your questions.

You can have great performance on a budget with TBI. That is what is so attractive about it. The stock heads and cam are worthelss and should be tossed out to sea. The exhaust is equally as worthless as far as performance is concenrd. I encourage you to read the stickies in the TBI fprum to help you understand what makes these cars tick. A simple exhaust swap combined with chip work and a medium cam can yeild amazing results. I would not even bother switiching to a multiport set-up until you can supply the funds to do it correctly on a motor with at least 45 more cubes. For now TBI will suffice and make cheaper high RPM power than a swap for TPI. When done right the results are amazing for what you are working with. A few members have literally dropped a second and a half off their ET by nothing more than a cam swap and chip work. Plus, all of the exhaust and suspension stuff you do now can be used on a future motor.
