wierd firing order on an 89 305 tbi..

A friends camaro has been going through ignition modules like crazy for the past few months.

The first time it messed up, I showed him how to install the ignition module. I noticed that the firing order was wierd so I wrote numbers on the top of the wires to remember his order. Then I tried the 18436572 order, and no go. So I put it back like it was and it fired up, i thought nothing of it then went home.

Well yesterday the magnet part of the pick-up shattered into a bunch of pieces while he was on the interstate. He got it towed to my house and ordered his new distributor.

Should I install it exactly as it comes out or go to TDC and use the correct firing order and set his timing. I can't tell you off hand what order they are in right now, but later i can post the order. What would cause a diff order to be required??

sorry so long.

thanks in advance

The firing order is always 18436572, in a stock SBC.

Most likely, any discrpeancy is in the observer. Mostlikely, mis-counting the cyls.

1357 left side front to rear; 2468 right side front to rear.

The only way the firing order would be different is if someone installed a cam that required a different firing order (highly unlikely) Comp cams have some cams that have a firing order of 18736542 where the 4 and the 7 are swapped in the firing order, this results in a better torque curve. If the engine is stock then it should have the factory firing order 18436572.

ok i checked in 5 degree weather(can't wait until I i get my new house with a garage in feb. lol)

and the firing order is right but with the wires starting in the wrong spot

.....x2..1
....7......8 x=screw
....5......4
......6..3x
front of car

the timing cant be THAT far off because the module is facing the same way as the one on my 91rs which is toward the drivers side of the car.
cant check timing because the car isn't running yet. I think i will just find tdc...but i would rather not have to.

Yep, I'm one of 'em. Just been going over there to help a tad. If you missed it there, yes, the dizzy was just dropped in wrong and they were lazy and just moved the wires accordingly.
