Without further data, any advice is purely speculative, but your description sounds like a possible leak in one or more injectors. This floods the engine when it is turned off, and usually requires some cranking to clear the chambers to allow ignition. The strong odor of unburned fuel is another indication. If you have a fuel pressure gauge, you can monitor the fuel rail pressure when the engine is turned off and determine if any of the injectors are leaking.
