could be:
When under power the pump forces more through the mostly clogged heater core, and at idle it isnt pushing much through...
Unook a heater core core hose and blow it out with compressed air. I just did it today on a friends car. You should have seen all the crap that was in there
And his heat works again

the thermostat sounds like a suspect too.
the last time I had a thermostat problem. The car would warm up and be toasty while it was idling. As soon as I drove it far the heat would go away. This seems a little different than your car.

If the core was replaced just last year then I doubt its blocked already.
More than likely the coolant hoses are blocked, the valve is going, or the vacuume hose to the heater valve is bad.

That was stupid of us to forget the stat. Can't believe I missed that one.

I ran into a problem like this when I hooked up a heater in my el camino. Where is your heater hose hooked up? I had the inlet threaded into the water pump like most 350's I've seen. I got no heat unless I was reving the motor. Brand new heater so I moved the inlet hose to the manifold and put a pipe plug in the water pump hole. Works awesome now.
have you moved hoses around at all? how was the heater working last winter? is all that vacume hose stuff still on your car? One of those "flapper valves" might be swinging open when you accelerate and closed when you brake? just an idea...

I believe that the valve is probably the culprit I just remembered this:
A long time ago I had a heater problem because the radiator was low. My water pump had gone bad and was losing fluid thru the weep hole. Because the level in the radiator was so low, my heat didn't work.
BTW: I'm sure he meant "stupid" in the most positive way.
