White powder on tail pipes?????????????
I just noticed about a couple of weeks ago that inside my tail pipes there is a coating of white powder all over the insides of my tail pipes. I wiped it off and it has come back. I have never noticed it before so I think it just started doing it. I had the car in the exhaust shop a few weeks ago to get my new headers and cat converter welded up and asked them if they have ever seen it before on other cars and they said no and had no clue as to what it was. They then saw I had A Borla Stainless steel exhaust system and thay said maybe it was a coating on the stainless steel that was burning off UNTIL I told them I have had the catback on for two years and that the white powder just started to show up in the last two weeks. Anyone have a clue as to what it is????

john5.7, Its possible it could be coolant.
Has the car gotten hoter than usual in the recent past? A head gasket could have started leaking went through the system. Its possible that it could have sealed its self up shortly after.
Thats the only thing i can think of.

I have seen cars that run extremely lean for one reason or another get that white powder in the pipes. I think it has something to do with what happens to the fuel when the engine leans out too much. Somebody I know explained it to me but I forget what exactly the reaction is that is going on when the engine goes waaayyy lean. You may have had this condition when your fans didn't come on and your car got too hot. The extreme high heat may have made it run lean and produce that white stuff.
Somebody will jump in and explain it better but I think this is what may have happened - unless you do have coolant leaking into the cumbustion chamber.
An idea........
Good luck...
