car quit completely,where to start

My car is an 84z28,auto,L69.It has been running fine until a couple days ago.As I was driving it just died like someone pulled a battery cable off.Turn the key,no sound at all,no power to then windows, radio, etc, however the interior lights do come on.I thought I could smell something electrical burning under the hood but couldnt isolate where it came from. All the fuses in the fuse panel are okay, battery is good.I disconnected the alternator,no change. It may or may not be related but I did have the a/c on and it dropped the voltage gauge a fair amount.Any ideas where to look?
thanks very much,
Tony

have you tried to charge the battery..?

maybe your alternator took a dump on you, usually it's the voltage regulator that goes

If it was the alternator, chances are it wouldn't have just died that hard.

You checked all the fuses, but did you check any of the fusable links?

I would still check the battery and alternator, though.

Enkil, chances are he would

happened to me in my '72 SS350 El Camino on the freeway..

i slowed down because an accident was ahead and my car shut off... just plain shut off, what a biatch.. anyways, i changed the alternator, gave it a boost and it ran like a top again..

i forgot to mention i was taking my GF home at 11:30pm, she had to be home at 12am, we got into town at 4am and she got home at 5am.. we walked 11 and a half miles into town, got the car fixed by 6am and went home and SLEPT, lol
