How the hell do I change the speedo cable

Has anybody ever cracked open the joint in the speedo cable housing under the brake booster? I need to change the lower part of the cable and I can't undo that freakin' thing. There's no space in there for any tools. It seems like the heat from the exhaust manifolds has sealed it shut or something.
