back-up lights sensitive/(acting up)

ive got an 86 z28/automatic. and the thing is that when i put it in reverse, i noticed sometimes the backlights come on and sometimes they don't. well, the shifter has a slight bit of play in the reverse position. and when i push it all the way back until it is almost in drive, they go off. but when i put it all the way forward so its up against park, they come on. im only talking about a slight bit of play in between shifts. is the play supposed to be there and somethings just not conecting, or is the play the problem. either way how do i fix it, its driving me crazy. thanks

Neutral safety switch in the console is probably getting worn out. The shifter might be getting a little worn as well. The safety switch also runs the reverse lights. Pop the console and make sure it's connected good(a bunch of wires plug into it).
