Setting timming with engine knocking
I installed new timming chain engine runs good but has knock.
I belive the knock is do to timming needing adjustment.
But if the knock sensor is retarding the ignition because of knock how should I set the initial timming.
Car is all stock no mods other than I removed air pump.
Distributer is for VIN code G but cars vin code is H
Previous owner apparently replaced the computer it has 95 writen on it with yellow marker ?????
305 with rochester quadrajet.

The G and H vin code distributors are the same AFAIK....
When you disconnect the 4 wire connector to set initial timing, the knock sensor doesn't work anyway till you plug it back in. If it's knocking after that, you might have another problem...
You'd have to look up the part # on the computer you have in it now, but chances are it's still for a CC carb system so it shouldn't change anything much I would think.
try setting the initial timing for LG4 specs, and if that doesn't work, set it for L69 specs and see if that helps any. Good luck with it!!

When setting the base timing (which I agree you need to check again) you can unplug the 4-wire plug behind the distributor (on top of the bellhousing) as described, above OR..... you can just jumper the A&B terminals of the ALDL connector under the dash and achieve the same thing.
In either case you want to have the car turned OFF when you connect/disconnect them. Don't be plugging/jumping stuff that goes to the ECM while the motor is running. Not that it will definitely blow stuff out (never happened to me), but it could and that's reason enough to be careful.
With the computer supplied timing taken out using one of the above methods your initial timing for a stock engine would be:
LG-4: 0* BTDC
L-69: 6* BTDC
Your timing tab is located straight down behind the water pump.
