Tools for valve seal replacement.

I want to change my valve seals, and could use a tip on where to buy a decent tool to do the job. I have a valve compressor, but it's the kind you need to get the head off to be able to use. So I need a tool to be able to do it with the head on the engine.

DO you have a pic of how it looks? Maybe I could find it locally, but need to know what to look for.

Also, I wonder if there are a tool to hold the valve in place, perhaps just a hose from a tire with two connectors on it, either way I dont have anything usable.

Finally, it would be best if I could buy everything, included the seals from one place, since shipping usually double the cost.

looks sort of like a 2 jaw puller with a screw hand wheel arrangement. most any place ought to have one. i'd bet autozone has one in their rent a tool program. use compressed air to hold valve up and in place, or string put in through the plug hole.

That is not the tool referred to. That looks like a shaft mount spring compressor. The typical one has a star shaped wheel on top and is about 4 inches tall.

You mean like this? This is the "regular one", I need one that could be used without taking the head off...

I have one that looks almost like this one though..

ede's description is accurate. It looks like a 2 jawed gear puller with a star shaped wheel on top. The jaws grab the spring and the wheel is spun to squeeze the spring together. Very easy to find at auto store since it may be the most popular type.

I have had no luck with the lever type compressors like the one shown. Sometimes there is not enough room in the engine bay to use this tool. The one I describe is much cheaper and much more compact. This makes it easier to use most times. Expect to pay about $35 (us) for the small one.

Ok, it sounds good, but this was all I could find, at least at autozone.

Do it have a specific name?

Okey, thanks, that helped alot, I found several on the net selling them , on ebay too.

Now, the second tool I need would be something to keep the valve from falling into the cylinder. I have heard about some hoses supposed to be used with compressed air, but I don't have a compressor. Is the pressure from a tire enough?

I have a tiny tiri compressor/inflator, could it be used? Normally it takes ALOT of time to pump up a wheel, so I don't know if it's the best thing to do. It could take a real long time then. The thing about a rope inside the cylinder sounds scary to me though..... Any ideas?

I personally use the compressor, however, If you dont have a decient one, there is nothing wrong with the rope trick, just make sure you have a nice long rope so that there is plenty still sticking out of the spark plug hole. You want no chance of the end slipping in the hole.

I bought this at Advance Auto right off the shelf for about $10 and had no problems with it. And they sold the spark plug/air adapter for about $3, also worked good.
