Changing 2-piece rear main seal

Ok, I know basically how to do this, but my chiltons manual mentions using a fabricated tool to install the seal. I was just wondering how you guys slide the seal in. Can you just do it by hand? The book doesnt say anything about offseting either, but i think i will. It makes sense. any help would be great.

Buy a Fel-Pro seal. The "tool" comes with it.

"Offsetting" the seal ends isn't a standard repair procedure, as such; it's something alot of us have learned by experience or word-of-mouth (or word-of-keyboard, in your case!).
