Opinions on CAI choices

I'd just like to get a few more educated/experienced thoughts on a few possible CAI choices for my car.
It's an 82 T/A with the power bulge hood, no block off plate and no hood insulation (I got it like this.)

I am going to be getting an Edelbrock performer RPM intake manifold, and keeping a non-cc qjet (as for height goes)

I would like to use the power bulge, I figured I could either get a drop base 360* open air cleaner, say from K&N, or something like that (and worry about hood clearance issues.) and the air cleaner would probably draw most of the air from the power bulge just from proximity, plus it'd have the ability to get lots of air 'cuz it's open...

If i'm reading this right, i'd be using a smaller top of the air cleaner that would just sit over top of my air filter (also probably a K&N) and seal the top of the original air cleaner to a plate which is connected to the power bulge. Only getting cold outside air, but probably less volume of air...

I know this is probably just theory, and opinion based, but I don't have any experience with this, so any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks -J

I think that using the power buldge like in the article would be better than an open element. The air will not be mixing with hot air from under the hood. Since the hood opening has basically no restrictions it should be able to feed plenty of air mated with a k&N fiter inter the inner lid.

yes and no the idea on that page is the same thing as the gm cowl induction on 60's and some 70's cars the l69 birds cowl induction was a little different

Yup, the L69 is a bit different. As well as LU5 Crossfire set-ups.

All this is interesting, really. I'm just afraid it's complicated to reproduce in lost southern France. Where do you think I'll find a 74 Apollo gasket and 250ci air filter cap ?

Too bad, because 18 more HP is reaaly good. But my CFI hood comes with a solenoid that opens at full-throttle (if it still works ), and a scartchbuilt system is not possible with local mechanics. They say "too complicated" or "doesn't worth the effort"

I'm afraid all I need is a bolt-on air cleaner. From another F-body or from a supplier, despite all these systems efficientcy.

And what would happen if I use the HO cleaner WITHOUT the hoses. No forced air, that's true. But dual inlets anyway, isn't it ?

You don't need a gasket from a 74 apollo. Some simple weatherstripping like what you'd buy to seal your front door would work fine. There's a lot of good choices for that.

The 250ci air filter lid is fairly common. It took me a little while to find, but not too bad. I just brought my measuring tape along with me to the wrecking yard. Aside from TBI 4cyl cars from the late 80's, all GM carbed cars had two sized air cleaners, the big normal one, and the smaller one (250I6 size). So I measured mine, then just found the smaller one and took it home.

I will just pipe mine to take in cold air all the time, no need for a solenoid.

Dual inlets without the hoses kinda defeats the purpose. Might as well just get an open element and enjoy loads of hot air. The hoses are to make it a cold air intake.

Naw, I've never owned an L69 car, I mean LU5 with the bigger opening, not the dinky carburated one.

I hope your CFI ran well.
Mine was always bad. Yet, my engine wasn't perfect also.

Now, it's completely apart, except for crankshaft and rods. They're still assembled together. My 305 will feature a Holley carb and a 1500-to-4500 rpm power range camshaft. I could choose more revs, but with my current stock converter and wide-ratio axle, I wish lower-end torque.

I contacted Ram Air Box through their website www.ramairbox.com
They offer an almost bolt-on kit for 82-92 F-babies. Sure, they are pricey, but our Euro is so strong that they suddenly become affordable . If they can match my needs, I'll buy them a kit.

When my car run again, in mid-November, I'll do with a L69 hose-less filter. Just for a while ( well, hope so ).
