how much compression safely with aluminum heads?

Ive been lookin at the eagle street/strip stroker kit on summit, 356-B13005L. 64cc heads=10.9:1. ive heard 10.5:1 on pump gas (for me, at least 92 octane) is safe. 10.9:1 seems to be pushing it. what do u guys think? I know i have to take into consideration deck height and all that, but lets just assume its a stock deck height. or hell, what wud be the minumun deck height i should go with? the block is at the machine shop getting cleaned, bored and all that good stuff. Or what if I used 92 plus octane boost? I just really dont wanna run C16 or nething like that unless I have to.

- What size engine?
- What camshaft? ***MOST IMPORTANT***
- EFI or carb?
- How well can you cool the engine?
- NA or forced induction?
- Nitrous?

No need for more than 10.5:1. Probably 10 would be sufficient. That's based on the assumption of the 274h.

well, cam selection's still up in the air. still very undecided as to solid roller or hydro flat. But either way, I wanna use the eagle kit, so whatever I gotta change to use it, Ill have to do it.

That carburetor is going to require a slight drop in static CR as well. Running SFI and a good control system, you could probably get away with something closer to 11:1. I'm running 10.8:1 on an LT1 that uses 91 octane at times. Nothing but reduced power. Having a little less mixture and spark control, you'll need to drop the compression and possibly increase the octane a bit to compensate. The last thing you want to do is go lean with preignition, only to "vent" the compression through a newly-formed hole in your piston top.

Figure that he’ll have to go at least ˝ a point lower with an SBC over your reverse cooled LT1. Going with a carb will probably also require a similar drop in compression just to be comfortable with the lack of instantaneous tuning/adjusting for changing conditions.

Debating between a “solid roller or hydro flat” is somewhat like debating between a turbodiesel and a wankle. Both will run but they fit completely different applications.

Assuming that this is a street engine why would you build something that you need to run an octane booster or splash of race gas on to have it run right?

What heads? Something like a set of fastburn heads would be significantly different then something like some vette aluminum.

Either way, I’d err on the conservative side and try to get compression into the mid 9’s. Change any of the above (heads with “faster” chambers, bigger cam, efi…) and then I’d start looking at high 9’s/low 10’s. It’s never fun dealing with a street engine that doesn’t want to run well on plain old pump gas.
