Charging Problem

My friend recently bought an 84 Camaro. It's a carbed 350. He was told the car doesn't charge right so he bought an alternator and new battery. It still had the same problem of not staying charged so he brought the alternator back, got another but still the same problems. I went over with a voltmeter and the alternator is only putting out 12 volts and then about 11 once it's warmed up and the RPM's drop.

Any ideas guys? i know it's an annoying repetitive question but he's desperate and asked me to help him out.

Seems like the ALt is still not puttnig out...you should see about 13.8-14 volts when running with no load (i/e lights and accessories off).

*cough* GROUND *cough*

Seriously, that seems to be the overwhelming problem in similar charging issues. The stud connection on the starter has come up a few times as well. Inspect them both as well as the rear ground and the wires themselves, then re-check the charging under load.

BTW, was the battery charged when you bought it? If not how did you charge it?

Also, does the "Choke" light in the dash come on when he turns the key on but the engine isn't running?

If not, try a new bulb. That might make the alt work.

No, I'm not kidding.
