Signs that an altenator is failing

Ok guys, I have a digital voltage readout on my car and when it goes below 10.7 it starts beeping that something is wrong.

So I started my car up today, and it had a nice 13.3 volts, then all the sudden whammo beep beep beep, the car voltage was at 10.6-10.2, so I drove my sister to school with the bad voltage, got as close as I could to the house as I could, maybe 1/4 mile and the voltage came right back.

It has been doing this periodically but never power gone for 20 minutes of driving, or more, so, is this the alternator? I already took it out; it’s a lifetime guarantee from AutoZone, and its only 2 years old. This sucks...

Anyways, if it’s the alternator, what are possible causes of one dieing?

DO they just quit working, or do they do what mine is doing, work, then don’t work, then work, and so forth.

I mean the stocks lasted what 10 years maybe, this newer one lasted 2, and how does AutoZone make money if they replace them so often?

Anyways, help me out here,

Thanks,
Shane

One thing that many people overlook is the battery in the digital meter itself. If this is starting to die then it can give incorrect and sometimes wildly inaccurate readings

if you have a lifetime warrenty on the alternator then just take it out and have them test it and see if its good that would be the first thing to do then also have your battery load tested to make sure it is also good

By getting you to go into the store (that's always the first step of staying in business), and if it tests fine, by getting you to buy a bunch of other stuff too. Autozone stuff isn't the best in quality, but with the lifetime warranty, you keep going back and back. It just gets annoying if it breaks down on the road repeatedly. Rebuilding an alternator isn't overly expensive, if you're in the parts business.

Get the alternator and battery tested at autozone. If either are bad, replace and see if the problem goes away.

And if you would read and search before you post, you would have seen that thread from kretos from tuesday about an alternator problem.

yeah guys new altenator is in, while i did that i went ahead and changed the oil also, and now the voltage on ym meter reads a steady 13.8-14.2 volts at idle, this is awesome.

They didn't even check the altenator i broguth in, just opened up a new box and handed me it and took the old one. I figured the battery is perfectly fine strictly becuase i drove close to half an hour on the battery alone. Batteries dont normally last that long if they are bad. Plus the battery has a what, 7 year warentee through some company, and its only been in for 2 years also, if it goes bad i'm in good shape as well...

Take it easy.
