Helms manual HUGE SALE

I just ordered the 3000 page factory GM 1990 Camaro service manual from helms.com that normally costs 135 for $30+6.95 shipping!! I didn't believe at first so I called helms and the operator told me yes, they are on sale until February 28. I thought about buying some now and selling later, but I figured you all would appreciate the info. If you need to move this to another board thats okay I didnt know where to put it.

It all just depends on the year you select. A 1990 Camaro manual is $30, but a 1991 Camaro manual is $67.50 ($30 for the manual, $37.50 for the supplement). I ordered mine earlier last week, and I can't wait to get it.

Daym, they wanted $118 for shipping + $25 in handling...
When I buy stuff at amazone.com, it's like 4-9 bucks...
And I have wanted one of those for years...

There was also a Camaro/Firebird Do-ti-yourself book as well, is that like the haynes/chilton books? it was listed at $15 but the description was the same as the service manual.

I didn't see that. Can you post a link to it?

EDIT: Found it. That's interesting. I've never seen those DIY books on there before. I guess they don't make any for 91 and 92 Camaros . Oh well. Zepher, let us know how that book turns out.

I didn't order the $15 one, I ordered the $30 one. I'll call them up on Tuesday and ask about the $15 book.

When someone gets one for an '89 GTA/TA/firechicken post it up, I still get $149. I got $89 for the '95 Mustang/Cobra. The '79 Vette is $60. I'm getting boned!

On the topic of repair manuals im in the market for one... Which is suggested by all you experienced ones out there? Haynes, Chilton, or the GM one listed here which seems to be a lot more expensive I found Haynes and Chilton for 15 and 18 bucks...
Thanks,
Steve

The Haynes and Chilton's manuals are good, but they lack info in a lot of specific areas. Both of those manuals give you all of the general information that you need to do regular maintenance and repair on almost every part and system on the car, so it's great for the regular DIY person. But, there's a reason why the Helm's manuals have 3000 pages, while the other manuals have, what, 200 pages? The Helms manual will pretty much tell you how to repair/diagnose/troubleshoot/fix anything on your car. I personally own both a Haynes and a Chilton's, and I've gotten plenty of use out of them. But they're just not enough for some of the repairs I need to do, anymore.

It all just depends on how much work you do on your own car.

So the Helms is equipped w/ the same step by step and picture setup as Chilton and Haynes but for everything you could possibly have trouble or need help with...

The Helms is the same exact manual that you will see technicians using if you go to your local dealership. If there is something you need help with that is not in the Helms, you must have created the problem yourself...thats putting it in the simplest of terms

They don't seem to carry any manuals for Chrysler products (Chrysler, Dodge, Plymouth, and Jeep).

If you are gonna get a DIY manual, get the Chiltons. No where near as many inaccuracies as the haynes, and it has vacuum schematics. By far the best is going to be a shop manual though. Chiltons, haynes, Motor's, etc... will have everything you will ever want to know and then some about your car.

This is not always true. Even using the Chiltons I have had occurences in the past where I needed to find something and Chiltons didn't cover it. And yes the shop manual is the best you can get.

I have a question, perhaps you guys could help me;

For my 1987 bird, helm says they have a "Final Service Manual"

But for the 1989 model, they have a "Shop Manual "

Is there any difference? Is a "service manual" worth getting?

EDIT: By the way, do any of you guys know how much this package weigh, and perhaps it's size? This is invaluable information when sending it half way around the world, I need to calculate ship costs. Helms quoted me $143 in ship, so I'm trying to find another solution. Aprox values would be better than nothing.

Thanks,

According to the descriptions on the Helm website, a "Final Service" manual and shop manual are the same thing, but it may be best to call them to make absolutely sure (although a phone call from Norway to the U.S. probably isn't cheap).

And, I weighed my 91 Camaro service manual and it weighs right at 5 pounds. Considering the weight of the cardboard packaging, I would say that the shipping weight would be 6 pounds. The dimensions of the box should be close to 10"X12"X3".

Hope this helps.

If you want, you can have it sent to my place and I'll send it to you in norway.
$143 for shipping is outrageous.

I sometimes use a freight forwarder called "jetcarrier" who suplly me with a virtual "mailbox" at their adress. This is a typical situation when I would use them, when they jack up the shipping fee. But Jetcarrier isn't free, the most affordable is to just use USPS, and it's plenty fast.

If it's more than 2 kg's, up to 5 kg Jetcarrier would be $57 from NJ to me+ the $6.95 from helm to NJ.

I bet USPS would do it way cheaper though, but Jetcarrier is still better than the Helm charge.

Just checked, USPS wants $28 for 6 pounds, $31 for 7

Problem is I cant force company's to use them when they don't want to. The only thing one has to do when exporting is filling out a small decal about what the content is, it's wheight and worth. That's it. Not something you would charge $120 for.

The shop manual for the 89 is a print to order..ie costs $149.99.
Would it be ill advised to get 1988 book or the 1990? I have a GTA. What differences could there be?

Mostly just wiring nuances. You'd want to stick with your load sensor though. I think 89 is MAP, so you'd want to go 89 or newer since pre 88 is MAF.
