It's referring to the torque converter. While I'm not sure what TCC stands for, I can only guess something like torque converter clutch. heh.

ANYways, it's not overdrive. The torque converter is the automatic transmission's version of a clutch, essentially. It lets the engine spin when the back wheels don't wanna; it's how the engine can be running while you're at a stoplight.

But that's not very fuel efficient. Since there is no direct connection between the engine and the tranny, only a fluid-filled space, there's some slippage, and loss of efficiency. To combat this, they made the torque converter lock up, via some form of a clutch, that does directly connect the engine to the tranny, so there isn't any slipping.

Torque converter lockup occurs after 35mph. Every time you hit the brakes, the torque converter unlocks, so the car doesn't stall when you come to a stop. That's also why, if you ever paid attention, if you're driving at about 50 mph, and have to hit the brakes for a second (for a turning car, for example) the rpm's are a bit higher than they were a second ago, and then drop down some.

Thanks Man! I am just trying to see if it is working. Because I am not too sure about the gas mileage I am getting. I will get a better Idea on this tankful of gas, since I have been driving like an old lady. LOL
But I was told that if the TCC wasn't working, I would get some poor gas Mileage. I will try what you were saying, and pay attention when I hit the brakes.
Thanks again!
Mike

When the converter is slipping (ie- the TCC is not locked up) there is a larger amount of heat produced and you may burn the fluid. When you go with a higher stall converter (basically one that doesn't lock up until a higher rpm) it will generate a bit more heat and you'll be a good canidate for an aftermarket cooler. I would suggest one anyways after having seen how small and in-efficient the stock cooler inside the radiator is!

A bad coolant temp sensor will prevent closed loop operation and prevent TCC lockup which will basically send your MPG to squat.

It's a longshot but you would get a code 15 I believe it this were happening. Happened to me and I didn't know it. (SES light burned out).

There's a variation on that way of checking... keep your right foot steady on the gas, and tap the brake pedal lightly down with your left- just enough to turn on the brake lights. You'll see the tach jump up a few hundred RPM... release the brake, and the TCC solenoid will go back into lockup, and the engine will drop a few hundred RPM.

With this way, since you've always got your foot on the gas, it's easier to notice the TCC lock & unlock.

TCC = Torque Convertor Clutch.

Mine hasn't worked since I got the car running. I average 19-20 mpg commuting, ~24 highway. If that sounds terrible, then I guess I'd better get that TCC working (in the plans, just not immediate).
