need help with code 54 again!!

I checked the archives and have seen what has been said, but I need additional help. Last summer, I got a code 54. I took the car to the dealer in July and they found a relay corroded, replaced it, and everything was good until Staurday. The service order said.
"Vehicle is hard starting. SES light is on, code 54, customer replaced EGR per recommendation on last repair visit (code 32 also) Fuel pump does not prime for 2 seconds, trace wiring and found relay severely corroded and connector corroded. repaired wiring and replaced relay."

The car is throwing a code 54 again and I just bought another Fuel Pump relay, but it turns out the service dept replaced the relay closest to the fender, not the FP relay. I called parts and gave them the part number of the relay they replaced and it references back to some fan relay assembly, not the fuel pump relay. If the car was hard starting last year, they replaced the fan relay, and the car drove fine and started fine since then, why would I be getting this code again. I don't understand how the fan relay is associated with the fuel pump. I did notice that the fuel pump is not priming again, but does run for 2 seconds when I shut off the car. I put the relay that I bought in and it didn't change anything.

If the fuel pump runs fine at shutdown, but doesn't prime, what could be the problem?

By the way, the dealer said they warranty labor and parts for 12/12, so they will look at it again for no charge, I just need to know what's going on with an 8k mile car.

Code 54 means the ECM is not seeing the proper voltage through the relay to the ECM.

The reason you hear the FP running at shutdown is because it take a few seconds for the oil pressure to fall below the set limit in the oilpressure switch....which also supplies the FP with voltage to run the car.

I'd wonder about the previous work done and if it really was done, but it if the work was done, and you've replaced the relay with no effect, could be that the wiring has corroded again...which could be likely on a car that seems to sit quite often.

I called the dealer tonight to schedule the return visit. The service guy said they might have gotten lucky while working on the corroded wires that went to the fan relay and hit whatever might be the problem and it appeared to fix it. They told me not to waste any time working on this as they will find the problem and fix it. The service guy said it could be wiring again or it could be the ECM. They'll let me know. At least I only have to pay for the parts since the labor is still covered.

I've been thru this recently myself. I changed the relay but I still got an intermittant 54.
About a month ago I replaced the ecm and now the pump always primes and no more codes (although I do still have the hard starting problem).
Hope this helps.

Bob
