I think I screwed up...
I was driving a friends 91 z 305, 5 speed the other day. I was just learning to drive a stick and missed second and severly over reved the engine. I think I put it up to about 6500.
Anyway now it makes this very distinguishable ticking sound all the time. What could I have done to it? I have to give the car back soon and I either need to fess up or fix it really quick. thanks

Yeah ya did...you probably floated the valves, may have a probably in the valve train somewhere.
Could also have tossed an exhaust gasket, or worse yet a head gasket.
Best to fess up and get the checkbook out.

CG99,
If this person from whom you borrowed the car is truly a friend, and you'd like to keep it that way, just be honest. Obviously, you'll probably be paying for anything that might have been damaged. It might be as little as a bent push rod (about $5) or a relaxed gasket (about $150). You might also have pushed a rocker stud out of the boss, in which case a set of screwed rocker studs would be a nice gift. You can get the studs and a tap for about $35.00, plus new rocker cover gaskets.
I'll guess that Mike is correct - it's likely in the valve train, but it might also be an exhaust leak at a flange. Check closely, or have a mechanic check and be prepared to relay the news to your "friend".
Good luck.
