Car: 1989 IROC-Z
Engine: 350 Vortech Supercharged ZZ4 TPI
Transmission: T56
Axle/Gears: 3.73
best rear with ZZ4 / T56 (within)
I have been trying to figure this one out... I have created a chart, but I don't quite know what to make of it. Maybe someone here can help me out.
ZZ4 (350cid motor)
T56 (6 speed manual trans)
calculations are based on:
1. ZZ4 dyno sheet with 650cfm carb
2. shifting at 5700RPM
ZZ4 motor specs:
max torque: 3750
max HP: 5500
T56 6 speed manual specs: (from 94-97 F-Body)
1st - 2.66:1
2nd - 1.78:1
3rd - 1.30:1
4th - 1:00:1
5th - 0.74:1
6th - 0.50:1
REAR RPM
3.23 <- rear gear
1->2 3850 @ 51mph
2->3 4200 @ 76mph
3->4 4400 @ 104mph -> 135mph[fastest it can go in 4th - finish 1/4]
3.42 <- rear gear
1->2 3800 @ 48mph
2->3 4150 @ 71mph
3->4 4400 @ 98mph -> 127mph[fastest it can go in 4th - finish 1/4]
3.73 <- rear gear
1->2 3800 @ 44mph
2->3 4200 @ 66mph
3->4 4400 @ 90mph -> 117mph[fastest it can go in 4th - finsih 1/4]
3.90 <- rear gear
1->2 3800 @ 42mph
2->3 4200 @ 63mph
3->4 4400 @ 86mph -> 112mph[fastest it can go in 4th - finish 1/4]
4.11 <- rear gear
1->2 3800 @ 40mph
2->3 4100 @ 59mph
3->4 4350 @ 81mph
4->5 4215 @ 106mph -> 143mph[fastest it can go in 5th - finish 1/4]
Chart explanation:
1->2 3800 @ 48mph
reads as: shifting from 1st to 2nd at 48mph(5700rpm) will put you in 2nd at 3800rpm(48mph)
Any info is helpfull... thanx!

There are so many variables -- power to weight ratio, how well you shift, etc. Nice chart and not to flame -- but the best chart doesn't do you any good until you know what it means
If you shift well and there's no traction issues -- go with the 4.11's
If there's traction issues (and there most likely will be) or you only want to shift 3 times, step back on the gears. The numerically higher the gear, the faster it will spool up essentially, but the more likely you are to experience a traction problem. Also, the numberically higher the gear, the more likely you'll have to shift again to avoid bumping your rev limit at the end. Just remember - almost nothing is better than trial and error. do what works for you
------------------
1985 Trans Am - rough and ready -- 3" cat and primary exhaust, lowered 2", custom rust body work mild fender denting. Daily driver.
1976 Corvette Stingray - not so rough, but always ready. 427 BBC .030 over (433 ci) 12.5:1 compression about 600-700 HP/World Class T5 tranny, and no, I can't gun it for fear of breaking my tranny - upgrading to a muncie/gear vendors O/D as soon as I get some more $$$
