limp home mode??

My car runs okay when the check engine light is on, but if it is off then it will only rev to about 1500 rpm and keep jumping up and down, sometimes it even stalls. Is this limp home mode? I would think the SES light would be on in limp home mode. I also have a code 33. all relays were replaced and the wires have no shorts. Please give your suggestions.

87,

Get your hands on an "unmodified" MAF sensor and try it again. Check the message archives about MAF sensors without screens and teh air flow patterns through the sensor body. You could be getting a false reading.

A '33' means the MAF is reporting more intake air than the ECM expects at a given engine RPM and throttle opening. Since the RPM is reported by the HEI module and is probably working, check the TPS base voltage setting.
