Fuel pump, fuel presure reg, fuel filter, just plain dirty injectors????

I was racing my fiances dad this morning in his 79 mustang needless to say I stomped him and I had a case of the DUH I NEED GAS it was alittle over the empty line so I hit the brakes and turned to the crossover and It died. This has happened to me before but it hasn't taken this long to get it to start. Normally I can wait 5 minutes of so hit the gas and crank it over well not this time every 5-7 minutes for 30 minutes and it still wouldn't start so he happened to come back the other way and help me push it across the highway still wasn't able to start even with ether aka starting fluid. It was getting spark and all. It just wouldn't turn over. You could smell gas just wouldn't turn needless to say 45 minutes later after i anitially killed it he took me to work and now 8:30 hours later it started right up with a minor tic noise till i hit the gas and i went away??
it is a 87 2.8 mpfi I've been meaning to change the filter and add stp ficleaner but haven't yet.
I have also ran a code 54 (fuel pump voltage) but no help so far on what the hell it could be. So please help I really cant aford the time or money to change the pump please tell me its just simple as the filter ie been at least 3 years since new filter

Well, yea change that filter. That way you could eliminate one cause. Hmm..it sounds kinda like you did in fact run outta gas, then there was nothing for the pump to suck so you were dry firing the engine and the pump wasnt sucking anything and possibly you damaged the pump. When you started it later, did you use starting spray? Did you fill with gas right away?
