Distributor cap problem
My 89 T/A hasn't been running too well so I decided to change the cap and rotor on it. It's a 305 TBI engine. When I took the old cap off there was a place worn out on the flange in the middle of the cap (see Attachment). Well I put the new cap and rotor on and started it up and it ran for about 3 seconds and then died and wouldn't start again. When I looked at the cap I noticed that I didn't have it on straight so I took the cap off and the rotor had dug into the same section on the new cap as was worn on the old one and it had snapped the tab on the inside of the rotor that lines it up on the distributor shaft. I went and got a new rotor and put it back together and started it again. This time it ran for about a minute but had 1 or 2 dead misses then died and wouldn't sart again so I fugured it broke the rotor again. But when I took it back apart the rotor was still intact so now I'm dumbfounded
. Also the metal piece that comes down from the center of the cap and touches the center of the rotor looks like a piece chipped off of it. Is there supposed to be something between it and the rotor. Thanks for any help in advance I'm lost
