Explain this situation? The subject really says it all.

All the plug wires are going to the right plugs and the distributor has worked in the past...nothing special going on with the ignition at all.

This has happened after a head and cam change on the motor so the compression has raised quite a bit, but I can't see that affecting this at all.

I also realized with these new heads I might need a different pushrod length, could that be causing a problem or two? ...or even be the cause of this wierd backfiring problem?

The motor sounds soooo healthy when it's idling with the timing bumped up but as soon as you hit the gas it backfires and when you retard it, the damn thing won't turn over.

****...my buddy just informed me that I'm using a 305 balancer so the timing marks are way the hell off so that part is fixed thankfully BUT

NEW PROBLEM:

The pass. header is turning bright red due to a lean condition. My friend is saying it's because of a vacumm leak somewhere. It's not any of the brake lines, pcv, or dist vaccum, so he was saying the heads and intake may not be aligned properly if the heads have been decked too much. Please tell me there's another explanation for the lean condition.

Someone suggested trying a different spark plug, but somehow I doubt it will be that easy to fix.

Retarded timing is one of the most common causes of the headers running red. It doesn't take but a couple of minutes running time for it to happen too.

Put a vacuum gauge on the engine see what reading you have. Reading should be steady with no sudden dips.

Use the old 'water spray bottle" technique or an "UNLIT" propane bottle to check all the possible locations for sucking vacuum. If the idle suddenly changes when you direct the water/propane at a certain spot, you've found your leak.

Check all the vacuum hoses, especially the underside. If any are brittle, replace them. Don't forget the one on the underside of the TB ("Y" bodies have 'em so I'm supposing "F" bodies do too).

Hope this helps.

Jake
