ok somebody give me info
i have an 86 305 with the computer controlled q-jet, i put a crane compu cam 2032 and wp s/r torquer 305 heads and coated headers on, when i go to take off from a stop (standard) it bogs right down like it wants to die and you hear a pop, when you get going cruising at a steady rpm, the exhaust pops like it's backfiring, what would cause this? the cam recommends 3:45 rear gears or higher, i have 3.23's would that cause it to bog down while taking off? this thing is pissing me off, it surges too when you keep a steady rpm, but what is causing the popping? i'm also using the stock mechanical fuel pump, is that sufficient for this combo? also when you get it going it seems to pull fine in the upper rpm's but every so often if you mash the 4bbl it'll pop through the carb, but not all the time

More likely than not it's the quadrajet. If it is so, you have two options:
One, get an edelbrock or holley or demon or some other quick & easy fix.
Or, the one I'd do.. Get a bigger Rochester, like a 700+cfm, then have it PROPERLY rebuilt and tuned, and you'll see some great performance and gas mileage.
