come on guys, give me some hints

my car is running like total crap, no codes, but when i'm cruising it is popping through the exhaust like pop pop pop steady, sometimes when i mash the 4bbl it'll backfire through the carb, but not all the time, and when i go to take off from a stop (standard) it feels really sluggish and just wants to die till i bring the rpms up and get going, what would cause this? i have the timing set to around 10 degrees, also i dont think it really did this till after my head and header install, what should i check? also one of my rockers was ticking so i adjusted them and it was really quiet until i hit the gas a couple of times, and boom the ticking came back, i appreciate your opinions, and suggestions.

mods in sig.

first place to start i think is to make sure you have a good tune up and all the related parts are good. i'd run compression check, check vacuum, make sure timing is right and the advance works. just guessing i'd suspect burnt valve, timing chain, or cam problems, but it could be something simple like a couple of bad plugs or wires also.

Popping in the exhaust is produced by raw fuel passing unburned through the engine and igniting once it's in the pipes. In other words, one or more cylinders aren't running.

Check your ignition system carefully.

If your valves won't stay adjusted you need new lock nuts. Go to the dealer and get a set; they have the best ones.

Backfiring through the carb is usually caused by a lean condition.
