valve springs and retainers
here is my question...
can i put the new vavle springs and retainers that came on my vortec heads on my LG4 heads without any problems...
The vortec heads are getting higher lift vavle springs... but the cam i am putting in my lg4 will only have approx .420 lift...
thanks,
Chris

Chris,
Stock springs will handle 0.420" lifts without a problem. You need to make sure the O.D. and I.D. of the springs are correct for your 305. AFAIK, the Vortecs still use 1¼" springs, so it should be a good fit. You should plan to use the entire spring package, retainers and locks included. double check the installed height with the new spring packages, since the spring seats may have been machined deeper on the exhaust side to accomodate the rotators.
Of course, if the heads are already off the 305, it is very easy to machine for larger springs, then use centering cups to install the smaller springs. This will allow you to use the small springs now and anything larger later. Screwed studs are also a "must do" at this point, since the stud kits are about $15.00 and a new tap is about $6.00. Might as well do it now. This is also a really good time to install umbrella seals.

With that many miles have bronze guides pressed or threaded in(depending on type).
Maybe having the valves ground would be a good idea. You could fill the port up with rubbing alcohol and see if any leaks through the valve. A machine shop would prolly charge around 75 to 100 for this.
That's alot of miles!!!
