350tpi with t-tops

I just bought a 1988 iroc z 350tpi with t-tops , iw was told the car is rare i don't know?but anyways my problems are as follows the car still has what feels to ba alot of power but it starts really hard i mean hard every once in a while it will fire up quick but not usually , my other problem is the radiator has a crack in it its gettin fixed but i was wonderin if that would ahve anything at all to do with my problem?might not the other thing is everytime i go to put gas in my car when i take the cover off there is a loud his noise like when you leave a jug of gas out in the sun and take the cover off ,i can also hear the fuel pump pumpin when the car is running while i pump my gas i have never heard that before and i don't know if its normal or not?and when i try and squeel from a dead stop its kinda crappy on the odd occasion it will really rip off the new 245/50r/16's . And i am really curious should i be able to handle a stock mustang gt from the years 87-93?those rustang guys are so ****y!!!!anyways anyone with any advice at all please reply i will greatly appreciate it and hopefully its nothin too serious.irocs rule!!!!!!!!

Do you know the VIN?(Im sure someone here can decode it, DONT post it though) Do you know for sure that it is a 350? People pull the "its not a 305, its a 350" when selling cars a lot. IIRC no t-top 350s were made. Do you get any engine lights? You may want to check the "check engine" light bulb also, I have seen people take it out when selling a car. Have you done a tune up? Any smoke at start up?

A cracked radiator wouldn't affect performance much, unless its a huge crack and your engine isn't being cooled well. In that case you really need to fix it because your engine is getting really f&$%&d. The hissing is relieving pressure from the system, you may want to check your charcoal canister and definately replace all your filters. What kind of sound does the fuel pump make? I don't think you should be able to hear it over your engine when the car is running, only make a whining sound when you first turn the key.

Does it hesitate when you press on the gas? I think a good tune up could fix a lot of your problems, and remember that 02 sensor. Don't worry about racing until you get your car running well.

Not sure about the mechanical problems, but if you want to find out if those are factory T-tops, look for the CC1 option code on the lable in the center console.

My car was an original 5.7TPI with t-tops. It's not that rare.

Post the 7th digit of the VIN, it will tell exactly what motor came in it.

The noise from escaping pressure in the gas tank is completely normal. Alot of modern cars will set a code if the gas tank is not pressurized.

Your fuel pump shouldn't make much noise. Usually you can just barely tell it's there, it shouldn't be loud or anything. I'd bet you'll be replacing it soon. Keep the tank more than ¼ full. Since the pump relies on the fuel for cooling and will burn up if not cooled, this will prolong its life as long as possible.

It's difficult for a TPI car to "handle" a Mustang. The 302 is set up better for top end HP, and those cars are lighter than ours. A good 350 TPI in stock trim wil run about even with a stock Mustang GT auto; but if the Mustang has a 5-speed, or is significantly modded, it will hand a L98 car its head.

I KNOW THAT A 350TPI WILL THRASH A MUSTANG. BEEN THERE, DONE THAT. I HATE IT WHEN I'M AT THE STOPLIGHT AND SOME GUY IN A MUSTANG NEXT TO ME IS REVVING HIS MOTOR TRYING TO START SOMETHING. NEEDLESS TO SAY, THAT HE GOT HIS BUTT EMBARASSED BAD! MY WIFE EVEN BEAT A MUSTANG IN HER DODGE STRATUS. MOST OF THOSE MUSTANG GUYS ARE ALL ATTITUDE WITH NO MEAT IN THE MOTOR TO BACK IT UP. BY THE WAY, MY IROC HAS 200,000 MILES ON IT, AND THE MUSTANG THAT I BEAT WAS A BRAND SPANKING NEW GT, 5-SPEED.
AS FAR AS THE HARD STARTING GOES, I'M HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM, A FRIEND TOLD ME THAT IT WAS THE PICKUP COIL, IT'S ONLY ABOUT $8.00. I HAVEN'T PUT IT IN YET.

RB,
I believe its the 8th digit of the VIN. As in my car 1G1FP21F2....... The F indicates the car was originally a 305 TPI. I'm sure you just had a typo but the guy may not know.

Sorry, I slipped. That's what I get for not proof-reading my posts!

Thanks for pointing that out.

Now that I think about it, I have seen a lot of ads touting "rare" IROCs. They end up being just run of the mill IROCs. The guy trying to sell it is most likely trying to dump it off on some unsuspecting schmuck or he has no idea in hell what he is talking about. Either way you don't want to deal with them. Now the 90 IROCs were a tad limited in production but since they can still be had for around 5 grand it's still nothing special.

I also have a 350 tpi with t-tops. I've also seen plenty of them for sale and on the street. I consider a rare IROC a car with less that 35k miles on it and in good condiotion inside and out otherwise most of them are all basically the same.
