Edelbrock Heads, longevity questions, header Q's too.
Well, after not much luck in trying to find a set of CI heads that I'm real fond of, I'm leaning heavily towards the 6085's.
Anyone have these on for several years without sealing problems? Without contamination issues? etc?
Anyone have any issues bolting up SLP headers to the heads (heard of AFR problems, thought I'd ask).
This will be my first venture into the Al. head territory.
Also, carparts.com has a 20% coupon, with tax and shipping, to my door the price is around $925.00, anyone think there's a better deal out there?
Thanks in advance.

A friend of mine had a set on a 400; he ran it for 90-some thousand miles in 5 years at which point the short block wore out; we built him a new one of those, and had them freshened up and put them back on.... so I guess the longevity is OK.
I don't know about SLP headers specifically, there were no problems with whatever headers it was that he had.
In general, the fit and finish, and all that sort of thing, was reasonably good. Like all aluminum heads, we had trouble with stripped threads; but once I finally convinced him (after the 3rd or 4th one stripped while we were putting it back together) to just Heli-coil every single bolt hole in them, even that ceased to be a problem.

I'd thought about helicoiling for the headers and accessory holes too.
I didn't think the intake bolt holes needed it, not really a lot of torque there, doi you guys do them as well? or strip any out when installing the intake?
Thanks

Yes one did get stripped. Rather than risk putting any more stuff halfway on and having to take it back off and buy new gaskets and all that, we did the headers and intake holes. We didn't see the necessity of doing the valve cover bolt holes or the acc bolt holes.

Umm, guys, Edeblrock already heli-coils every bolt hole in the heads. Well I think the rocker cover ones aren't but other than that they are. Maybe the heads you worked with were before Edelbrock made the decision to heli-coil everything.

That's very possible, obviously they're pretty old. That's a real good idea on their part. I imagine they got tired of hearing complaints, considering that stripping bolt holes in aluminum is almost inevitable, especially for people who aren't used to working with it.

I have both the 6085 heads and the SLP 1 3/4" headers and they work GREAT together. No problems. The steering wheel column is at least an inch away. I did have to bend the brake lines away but that only took 5 minutes. As far as stripping the heads I haven't had a problem, even when I used regular spark plugs for the first 6 months on accident, thanks Edelbrock
