New mini starter - which one?

Hey all, my starter is finally deciding to die on me ya know, gotta thwak it with the hammer a few times and it'll work lol.

Anyways, I'm looking into a new starter and given future upgrades, weight loss, etc, am looking at getting a mini starter.

I've read many good reviews on many, and am looking at getting a CSR, just wanted peoples opinions for other starters etc. I would prefer to spend a little less, but we'll see if want gives into need. Anyways, thanks for the opinions, as always, I appreciate it!

Engine/tranny is all stock, minus plugs, sparks, CAI, and exhaust, with headers coming soon.

Also, which starter would you recommend of the CSR's and other brands? thanks again

I installed the Jegs p/n 555-10001 $148.99 last year and it's worked great to date.

I installed the Gm performance parts mini starter for the zz4 motor. it bolted right up but i had to shim(included in box) the starter motor away from the mount.

I also have bee considereing using a mini starter, but didn't know where to begin looking. I'm building a 400 though, not a 350. Am I understanding correctly that it will fit my block? Also, how do you know you need to shim the starter, and by how much? Thanks guys...

For a 400 You will need a staggered bolt mount starter.
Your starter is OK if You have 1/8" clearence between the
flexplate gear and the shaft that holds the starter drive gear...If its less, You need shims. If it is more, You need to machine the starter mounting surface (this happens pretty rarely) Most of the time You will either be OK or need shims.

Best way to check for proper starter gear/flywheel mesh is to get a standard paper clip, use a screw driver tyo pry out the starter gear and stick a portion of the paper clip between the starter gear and flywheel, the paper clip should just fit between the two.

if it's too tight, install a shim and try again.

Good info so far!

Glad for the replies so far! I've also heard you can use an LT1 starter for the cars, and pros or cons about those? Thanks!

I think (depending on the next paycheck lol) if I can I'd still like to get the CSR, but otherwise I'm leaning towards the Jegs (555-10001) or the LT1 if my research is correct in that it's usable (again, stock 87 350 TPI). Which one would you guys recommend?
