High Idle and secondaries don't open...

Hey all, I just did the head gaskets on my car. Now my car idles at like 1400-1700 rpms... Also when I have WOT the secondaries don't open. It idled fine before I adjusted the rockers on the passenger side. I had to take off the EGR (to get the valve cover off) on the intake and I was thinking that may have something to do with it. I made sure it was tightened down. Any other suggestions besides vaccum hoses? Is this a common problem? I am guessing I am just going to have to look up some vaccum diagrams...

Thanks for any advice,
Tony

sounds like the carb is in cold start mode to me, check the eletric choke, they somtimes stick, it locks out the secondries and moves a cam on the throttlel stop which revs the engine about to the level your talking about

How would I get it to get unstuck? Just wiggle it or tap it? If thats all that would be great...

uh, I just took mine off when it did that, verry hard starting in the cold, you could try ajusting it, look for the black cylender thing on the pass. side of the carb with the wire coming out of it, it should have a couple of tick marks on top of it, and it should have 2 screws holding the edge of it in place, losen those screw up and move it while fliping the throttle untile it dis-engauges, that's how I think I did it (my car hasen't been a carb since 2000, and my memary is allitle fuzzy, you may want to pick up a hays or chilton manual)

Assuming this is a Quadrajet, how are you checking the secondaries operation? You can't really make them work with the vehicle sitting in your driveway....

Sounds to me like the electric wire to the choke (which comes out of the wire loom right along next to the EGR) is disconnected.

Go make sure that wire is hooked up. Then WITH THE CAR RUNNING, verify that there is 12V ON THE BLADE CONNECTOR PART OF THE CHOKE; not just on the connector when it's unplugged from the choke, but rather, ON THE CHOKE TERMINAL WHEN THE CONNECTOR IS FEEDING IT, WITH THE CAR RUNNING.

The reason the car has to be running, is that the choke will not get 12V unless the alternator is charging.

If you have 12V on that terminal when it's all hooked up and checked as described, but the choke never pulls off, then you need a new choke thermostat (the black round cover looking thing on the side of the carb). If you don't have 12V, then that's a different matter; and we'll go down that road if we have to.
