Can I go ahead and get the Vortec heads?

My 305 has an Edelbrock intake, it came with the car when I bought it a year ago, so I don't know which model of intake it is. It has 6 bolts on each side bolting the intake to each head. Is this the correct bolt pattern for Vortec's? My Car Craft article says they require a dedicated or more costly aftermarket intake, and the picture with the three intakes they tried look like they have six bolt holes on each side. But each intake looks slightly different than mine, so my question once again is: how many bolt patterns are there for intakes, and how can I tell if my intake will or not?

no, you will definatly need a new intake to work with the vortecs
also, my stock 305 exhaust manifolds (LG4) would not bolt up to the vortec heads. But im pretty sure the vortecs have a standard 350 exhaust ports.
the intakes aren't that much more expensive for vortec, but if your going to do a head swap, I would go ahead and swap camshafts while you have everything ripped off.

do some reading, look at what others are doing and make sure you know exactly what you want before you go ahead and purchase anything

have fun.

You don't have TPI do you Shawn!?!?? They don't make a Vortech TPI manifold yet. Scoggin-Dickey is working on one but I wouldn't hold your breath. Just making sure.

So what type of intake do I need? The requirements aren't clear to me. How do I tell if the intake I'm looking at will work or not? What is a good, inexpensive replacement? I don't think the single plane intake Car Craft used would be the right choice for me. Any suggestions?

Um there Is No reason Your exhuast Manifolds Shouldnt Bolt Up...

You need the performer RPM for VortecH heads. about 200 Bucks.

One of the dealers (SD?) sells a "completion kit" with the Vortecs that includes a q-jet intake, gaskets, and self-aligning rockers (don't forget them) for $300 (I think). You probably won't do better than that.

Don't forget you'll also have to get the Vortec shaved to bring the chamber size down to the 305's level.

As for how many intake patterns there are out there (factory, at least): the standard pre-'86 pattern; '87-later with the center two bolts at a different angle; and Vortec. Not including LT1 or LS models, that is.

Consider this: For about the same or even less money, you can get World S/R 305's that would be ready to bolt on, would use your current intake and rockers, have exhaust cross-over passages to keep your EGR working, and with very little porting (bowl work mostly), would flow as well as the Vortecs would for your 305. The Worlds also have screw-in studs vs. the Vortec press-in, are ready for higher lift springs that the Vortecs would have to be machined for, etc., etc., etc. To me, the Vortecs just don't make sense for a 305.

I have Vortecs on my car and you can get some that are complete and predrilled and tapped for both intake bolt patterns for $800
1.90 1.50 64 cc chamber. Breathing better makes up for low compression plus you can run cheap gas. The only thing is the raised intake ports on the Vortecs. Performer RPM will work though.

ATO, are these on your 350? If so, what you are saying is true. My point was assuming a 305, like Shawn says he has.

The last issue you need to deal with is the EGR provision 9r lack of I guess) that the Vortec's don't have .
