how do u know when u start to float the valves

basically when your car goes into redline and doesnt go any further. my 305 had a 5000 redline and ran out of power at about 5300 rpms

you will lose power and the engine will not rev out, as Hanks1 said..

you should be able to hear it because the valve will be staying open on either intake or compression stroke..

you'll also know when the valvetrain starts to fly apart and you bend valves and break pistons, keeper, retainer, rockers, and back fire. Basically all hell breaks loose if you float the valves too much.
