The tools I have around my house are becoming woefully inadequate for the engine work I've been doing lately.
What would a good tool set cost me and what exactly would I need? The usual wrenches and ratchets along with a torque wrench?

Deep sockets are a must. Open ended wrenches, both metric and standard. A good torque wrench. A good torx set. A lot of extensions. You can buy a Craftsman Mechanic's tool set from Sears in all sorts of combinations if you want to get started like that.

Yea, I would go raid Sears if I were you. A variety of sockets, rachets, extensions (get the super short ones for sure), wrenches, and of course hammers are a must. Chisels and punches are a good idea too. Getting better tools is always nice, but its really difficult to justify the extra cost for something most of us dont need.

i use snap-on and to me they're worth the extra cost. you can find good deals on tools at swap meets and flea markets. i started out with a lot of stuff from sears and upgraded as i could.
