You have a 700R4 transmission and most likely 3.42 gears out back. I'm not real sure on the gears as I'm not that familiar with V6 F-body's.
Is there still a facatory tag on your rear-end housing? If there is, decoding that lettering will tell exactly what gears you have. Also you might ask around on the V6 board.

If your RPO tag is still intact one of the code correlates to your rear-end gear ratio. The RPO decoder on this site is still down however. Look for a GU2, GU4, or GU6. Are complete list of GM's RPO codes can be found here.
For 1988, the possible axle tags for non-posi rears are 6HP, 6HK, and 6HL. The tag is located on the right axle tube on the forward side.

Jade Grey: is it really a 700R4 transmission? I thought those were for V8s? I have an 89 V6 firebird that I'm parting out and want to sell my transmission but I'm not sure what model it is. I'm not doubting you as I have no knowledge about these things, I just want to make sure thats correct before I post it for sale. Any ideas on a value?

So it could hold up to a V8 engine? I was looking at doing an engine swap but the mechanic said the tranny would have to go too because the V6 trannies wouldn't handle the power (he didn't look at the tranny itself).

V6 and V8 tranny's are different, but are both 700-r4's. The only automatic transmission that came after 1983 in F-bodys was the 700-r4
