need on advice do I change rod bearings?
as you know my rod bearings are making abit of noise at startup for 2 seconds.. my buddy(a mechanice) says replace the rod bearings and put a high flow oil pump at the same time. my cousin(a mechanic also) says don't bother your wasting your money something else will go after doing this. I'm confused.. is changing the rod bearings expensive??
what do you guys think?? the engine has 140,000 KM's and still pulling very strong.

I would not change rod bearings for a 2-second knock at cold startup. The engine in the car I am driving today, a 305 on a 78 El Camino, has been making that noise since it had about 90,000 miles on it (about 155,000 km); it has 341,000 miles on it now, with no engine work.
In no case would I recommend putting a high volume pump on it. It doesn't matter what the problem is, in a stock motor, a HV pump isn't the answer.
Try an AC/Delco PF-1218 oil filter, see if that helps. It has an anti-drainback valve to keep the oil from draining backwards out of the engine and back into the pan through the filter when the engine is off.

you might want to try synthetics, i've heard alot of guys say that they have less noise on startup (and less SMOKE) than regular oils..
i wouldn't recommend changing rod bearings without grinding the crank, but that's just me..

If it was bearings is would rattle and knock all the time. If it is bearings not fixing it will only lead to a catastrophic breakdown. There is a good chance you could ventilate the block or oil pan and crack the head if a rod goes. Changing rod bearings involves engine removal to at least lifting to get the oil pan off. Might as well have it rebuilt if you're pulling it.

ok.. I thought the pan could come off without lifting the engine.. I did have the oil changed yesterday and had them install ac delco filter with the check valve and it made no difference. btw the oil filter is vertical on that engine..

if you can keep the oil clean/changed & don't get down on it, it may last you a while without having to do anything but you always run the risk of damaging the engine block with a bad rod bearing. if you really care about your engine, it's time to pull the crank, have the journals surfaced, and install new rod & main bearings. if your going to go that route, you may want to go ahead and have it rebuilt. just my .02
i'm with RB i wouldn't change the bearings and there are other things it could be, like lifters or a piston.
