low oil press.
low oil press.
Two things I have a 92rs w/a305tbi Where is the oil press. sending unit. also when the motor heats up at idle below 600rpm the press. guage drops to 0 and running doesent go above 15psi very often. at start when cold press. is at 30psi and tapers of as motor heats up. I have changed oil and filter and I do not hear any valve chater when showing low press, I looked in valve cover when gauge shows both high and low press. and do not see alot of oil in there is this becuse of fact. roller lifters. I also flushed motor before changing oil. any help would be appreciated. thanks, nativ.

I could be wrong but...I think your gauge or sending unit might be bad. If the pressure really went to zero like you said, there should be another pressure gauge (somewhere near the oil filter I think) that cuts the ignition in the event the oil pressure is too low to prevent damage. It is independant of the gauge in the car.

your oil pressure sending unit is on the rear of the intake, drivers side, it could be shaped either like a bell or like a barrel about 1" in diameter and about 2.5" long..
they don't take too long to change, maybe about 30 minutes if all goes well..

Thanks for the info.I already have a new sending unit but the haynes manual does not have anything on the location of this unit. This is my first Fbody.Last chevy I had was a malibu classic about 20 years ago. WOW! What a difrence. Just got this car two weeks ago for 4,000 never been wrecked all original and stock as far as I can tell, 99,000 on the clock and still running strong. must have been owned by an old lady. Im hoping the 0 reading on the preasure gauge is the SU or an elec, problem. THanks again.
any one else ever have this problem?

Hmmm, on my 92 RS, the Oil pressure sending unit is located right above the oil filter. sticks straight out. I broke it the first time I changed the plugs.
It fit the above description, 1"barrel about 2.5" long.

yes, i did..
i bought my '87 IROC in Dallas, drove it home to Los Angeles and noticed my oil pressure was worse than when i left.
it got worse and worse. I pulled off the oil pan and started pulling off main bearings. The ****ing ******* had sold me my Camaro with a blown engine.
My car is back on the road now, stronger than ever
Here's some pics of it: www.IROC-Z.org/newpics

Yeah, I saw it before. 'I have low oil pressure' Told him to use thicker oil and not to drive it unless absolutely necessary. Don't floor it. What does he do? Floors it. No oil pressure+ high RPM's= not good. Calls me up and says 'my motor's making a funny noise' knock,knock,knock...
Until you find the problem, I don't recommend driving the car. It should have 10 psi at idle for every 1000 RPM the engine sees. Lack of oil pressure means the bearings can actually weld themselves to the crank, causing a spun bearing due to metal to metal contact. Find the problem first. Check the sender and the gage
