How Long Does it take for a bad sensor to Throw a Code ?

If my computer detects a bad CTS or TPS or MAF sensor, will it throw a code right away, or does it wait for it to happen three starts in a row or something. ?
I am asking because my poor driveability started with only a 53 code, then after trying to start it numerous times, and driving it a little bit, it eventually got a 33, and then a 15 and a 21. I am wondering why I didn't get all these codes at once.

How does this work ?

Thanks

as soon as it reads something in the data stream that is out of parameter it will set a code. if the parameters gets back within spec and doesn't change the code is held in the memory for 50 starts and then cleared.
