Cam Help........see trouble!

Ok as you can see in my sig. I have built a fairly strong 305 and have been having trouble getting it tuned in.......Well today I noticed the timing chain cover moving in and out and the motor ran.........is this correct or did the maching shop forget something when they built the short block....and could this cause my knock count!!!!

Thanks again for the help

Sounds like they forgot to tighten/install the cam retainer plate.....

Theres supposed to be a plate that bolts to the block infront of the cam behind the timing chain. This might have been taken off if you went to a non roller cam. This could also indicate the timing chain is very loose also. Some flex is said to be normal but if its threatining to punch a hole in your cover I would say something is amiss.

Well its a roller LT-4 cam and it was an original roller LO-3 block......The timing tab you can see wobble across the top of the balancer........It seems a little noisy in the front also........This is my first true rebuild and the machine shop did the assembly on the short block.

Thanks again
Brian

The LT4 cam has a longer pin for the timing chain and opticrap on the LT1 apps... it sounds like the pin wasnt tapped in like it should have been and its rubbing your cover. Thats my guess anyway. I'd definitely look into the problem before something really bad happens.

You need to pull the cover off and find out what's happening. Somebody didn't install something correctly...

Yeah they sure didn't........I think madmax is correct I don't think they thought of the pin but it is probably my fault also since they did the chain......I did the cover and didn't double check the cam!!!!!!

THanks all
