How much is a stock 305 worth?
How much is a stock 305 worth?
I apologize if this is far off topic for this forum, but I'm not really sure what my motor is worth! Its a totally stock 305 in an '86 Z28. 108K miles, in very good condition. It has TPI, which I plan on keeping. I really only want to sell the long block, water pump, and exhaust manifolds.
How much should I ask for this motor? I really haven't checked the paper yet, to see what people are getting. I've got a strong 350 waiting to go in, and since I'm stripping down the body for painting, I figured I'd empty out the engine compartment so I could get that too!

A 108k mile 305 Longblock? $400.00? Good luck. I don't think I'd pay $400.00 for a 108K mile 350 longblock, no would many other folks.
Realistically(did I spell that correctly, doesn't look right?)I don't think you're going to get much more than $100-$150 for it.
If you keep it in the car and running, let someone check it out (compression, etc), you may get more....

Yeah, I was thinking $150 would be more realistic. Especially since I need to keep just about everything.. pulleys, brackets, I probably even need the oil pan!
They don't look like they go for much on ebay, which isn't surprising. How much would you pay for a motor from across the country, that you couldn't even see run?
I'll probably just list it in the local paper for $150. I need to put in an ad for my S-10 cap anyway!

I gave away a 1986 305 shortblock just this spring. It turns out to be worth less than any other 305 because its a crossover year. It sports a 1-piece rear main seal crankshaft, but doesnt have the roller cam. Some of the 1986 engines dont even have the bosses cast into the block for the spider that holds in the lifters.
If it is a good, running 305, keep it a good running 305 and sell it as a complete long block. That is the only way I can see it being commercially worthy of selling. Someone might want to pop it into their S10, perhaps.
Thats what I am going to do with my 305 next spring. I'll sell it complete including the carb and computer, once I take the prospective owner on a thrill ride down a country road.

I too plan on replacing my 305 with a 350. I do not expect to get much for it (101K miles) even though it runs without any leaks or problems. A couple/few hundred dollars I think would be a realistic amount.
Since the amount I'd get would be so little, I think that I will just keep it and use as a spare in case the main engine (350) needs to be removed for whatever reason. Then, I could just drop this one back in while I work on 350 at my leisure.
Just a thought.

Well I called a couple of the junk yards around town this morining and confirmed my quote of 4/500$ And they said, for a running 305 your looking at 500$ For a running 350 they wanted 650$ thats running no smoke and good oil pressure. Of course thats carbed with manifold.

There's a world of difference between a "running motor with no smoke and good oil pressure" from an established business and a "used long block with an old water pump and some exhaust manifolds" from a random member of the general public. Also, keep in mind that the junkyard warranties their parts to the buyer, i.e. if it's not satisfactory as a running motor the buyer can keep exchanging it until he gets one that is. Are you going to do that for whoever buys your old motor? Then yours isn't worth as much as theirs. Rather, yours is a core, not a running motor. Then, remember that yours is not a roller block; demand for worn-out non-roller 305s with 416 heads on them is about as strong as demand for snow in Antarctica.
I'd say that somewhere between $100 and $200 would be the most it's possibly worth, including shipping, and you're not likely to get even that much for it unless you're real lucky. I've thrown motors like that in the garbage because they weren't even worth the trouble of hauling to the scrap yard for their cast iron weight.
