Crunching Noise on Breaking...

I've been having a problem where I hear a "crunching" noise come from my front end whenever I break. It doesn't even have to be a hard stop, but it still happens. I'm not sure if this is a suspension problem (i.e. due to the extra weight on the front suspension when breaking), or if it's a problem within the break components themselves.

I know you guys can't say for sure without actually seeing anything, but I was just curious if this was an issue you had heard of before and could give me any pointers on what to check first.

Thanks.

Soon as you apply the brakes? Could be the pads are a little lose and not clamped on to the calipers. Check em.

Steering feel ok? Not sloppy ect? Been under the car and grab onto and shake the front end components to look for anything worn? A pry bar comes in handy for that too.

It's kind of a hard thing to diagnose over the web by just a sound. Try some of those things and see if you can identify a problem.

I have the same weird Crunching noise. Its not even just breaking its almost when ever i give the car a little gas and turn the car. Im thinking that it might have to do with the shocks.

Does your rear end leak? have you checked your lugnuts? Ball joints? U-joints?

Where does this sound come from?

Re: Crunching Noise on Breaking...

the crunching/popping noise just got way worse. it is definitely coming somewhere from the front passenger side of the car. i put new bearings in, calipers, and brake pads. i suspected the strut mount bearing so i put some lubricant on the bearing but it made no difference in the noise so i don't think it is that anymore. i'm going to unbolt the sway bar to see if the noise is coming from that. Currently i think it may somehow be the lower control arm. i lifted the front of my car and there is a TON of play in the steering. the main problem for the play in the steering is that the steering box needs to be replaced, but i don't see how that can make the sound my car is making.
