question about redline rpm

I currently have a 305 5.0L tpi engine. My rpm redline is 5k, for a v8. What allows some cars to have a higher rpms, i know they are usually smaller engines. But exotic cars with large displacement have high rpms.
Can anyone explain why?
Is there a way to modify my engine to increase the rpm limit.? Thanks

Your motor (TPI) is desinged to work best and perform best at mid and low RPM's. Its induction and cam design were intended to make power in that range. They are also limited in that way and a cam and intake change would allow your motor to make more power at a higher rpm. Cam, intake, head design, and engine layout are what ultimately determine redline. A lot of the high reving engines you see are DOHC cam motors that have lighter valvetrians without the bulky momentum of a push rod set-up. Cam profiles also determine where an engine makes power. Some engines are desinged to make power at a certian rpms to take advantage head and intake air flow characteristics. There are many many factors to why certian IC engines have different power bands than others. I would take a look at a few books and read up on the differences and why motors are designed as such.
