Disconnect Battery, Turn on Key, Code 53 still there !
Why can't I clear out this code ? I disconnect the battery for way more than 5 minutes, hook it up again, don't even start the engine, get the codes, and the 53 is still there !!! Arrrgggggghhhhh.....
53 is System Overvoltage. Could it be the electrical system is throwing the code all by itself, even without the engine being started ? What does it mean if I am getting a 53 even before starting the engine ????
God, someone help me before I kill again !!!

Tonight, before you go to sleep, disconnect the battery, tomorrow when you wake up and feel like working on it again, connect the terminal and check for codes, if it's still there, I don't know what to tell you.
I'm no GTA expert, but my Chiltons manual only gives an explaination for codes 12-47(?) I know it doesn't go as high as 53...
#2 If there really is an overvoltage problem, then you'd think there is more power stored in stuff, and maybe it takes a long amount of time to dispatch that electricity. Whenever I clear codes, I disconnect the battery, and whenever I feel like going some place (usually hours later, sometimes days) I'll hook up the battery again.
Good luck man, it seems like your having alotta problems with this car (either that or your very **** like me and some of the rest of us :P)

Code 53 indicates a basic problem with the alternator. It is set when the voltage at the ECM ignition input pin is greater than 16.9 Volts for more than 10 seconds. The general fix is in the charging system.
The GM Shop Manual recommends clear the code and confirm "closed loop" operation and no SES light with the engine running.
Sounds to me that your alternator probably needs replacing and you may have fried your ECM in the process.

Makes me wonder if I have a computer from a newer car!
Oh, yeah, 53 could also be EGR, just to make things more interesting. If it is stuck wide open, I spose that when the key comes on, the ecm sees that it is wide open and sets the code.

BTW, how are you getting the code?

I am jumping the a and b terms on the aldl. When my driveability problem started, code 53 was the only code, and even then I could not get rid of it, as mentioned above. After the mech had the car, it started giving him 33 and and a 53, and after 2 weeks at his shop, I yanked it away from him in disgust, and drove it back to my garage, where it then had 15, 21, 33 and 53. I adjusted the tps, and now I just have 15, 33, and 53 ** IF I START THE ENGINE **... If I clear the codes, the 15 and 33 go away, but the 53 stays. I think maybe *once * all the codes actually went away.
Since the 53 was the first code, I think I should track it down first. But I wonder how high system volts (53) could cause the tps to throw a code, and the CTS (code 15) , and the maf (33) .... ANy way I can test my alt with my voltmeter ?

Not necessarily ****. Obsessive, perhaps.
