IAC, socket won't clear the plenum????

Hey all. Well, been having poor gas mileage lately, i figure because of my TPS and IAC adjustment, raising them both up to keep the car from dying.

Anyway, I bought a new IAC yesterday, and a 1-1/4" socket to uninstall/install it. (i have the socket style IAC).

Well, the socket can't fit over the IAC because the plenum is in the way! There is about 2-3mm of clearance between the IAC and the plenum. I am a few mm short to get the socket to fit. How can i get this thing off? I don't have to pull my entire throttle body off do I?

My chiltons says to use a wrench and just disconnect it. There is no way a wrench would fit in there, unless it was a magic wrench, which was less than 3" long, and was made paper-thin, so it could clear the few mm it has to work with, and also have room to turn. (i even dropped my alternator, and pulled its bracket off, to make sure the 1-1/4" socket would be ligned up with the IAC, with no tilt at all.

I saw how close it was to the plenum, which is why i tried the socket over the wrench chilton's suggested. Still, the clearance of the socket is close, it looks like if i jammed a file in between the IAC and the plenum, and worked at shaving the planum down for a few years, i might be able to get enough clearance to get the IAC out. I just don't think this is the way to do it. Could someone please suggest something? Im quite confused.

Hmmn, I didn't use a socket, but a wrench instead, don't recall (been several years since I did it when it was in the car) whether i used the box end or open end.

But, there's only 4 bolts holding in the TB assy (TPI I assume?) and now would be a good time to get a gasket kit for the TB, pull it completely apart and clean all the passages, etc.

Once the TB is off, I'd guess you could easily get the IAC out with the socket.

It takes like thirty seconds to get the throttle body off. There are three throttle cables attached to it, four bolts, and a vacuum line. Two coolant lines if you haven't bypassed them. Just put a wrag underneath it to soak up the coolant that leaks out if you didn't bypass it already.

Alright, if thats what i have to do. I wasn't sure how hard/easy it would be.

What else do i need to do? disconnect the TV, and accel cables?

Do i have to do anything special to get the TB off? Or just unscrew it and pull? Shoot, might as well do the TB by-pass while im at it then.

Thanks for the suggestion! i figured if the 4-step IAC removal was so hard to do, then taking off the throttle body would take 15 trained mechanics, and a year of work. Im too easly spooked i guess.

The only thing you really need to be careful about is underneath the TB is a line (1 or 2?), you need to make sure it's connected when reassembling to the plenum.

Well, it looks like if i take off the throttle body it will still have the same problem. There is a lower peice underneath the throttle body, which i think is supposed to control vaccume and stuff. (chiltons)

Ill check it later tonight and see what it says about taking IT off. man, lots of work for just a simple IAC replacement...
