Is My EGR Stuck Wide Open ?

Here are the symptoms :

A). Car starts, but won't idle. You need to keep feeding it gas to keep it running.

B). Car stalls out under 15 mpf unless you keep feeding it gas.

c). Car runs OK if you are going over 40 mph.

d). Horrible smelling blue exhaust. Not billows of blue like an oil burner, but definitely some blue smoke and an awful smell, hard to describe, like something coming out of a factory.

How can I check the EGR, to see if it is stuck ?

Thanks

well, you could always take off the egr and put vaccuum caps over all connectios with it, and also make sure to seal up the hole in the manifold so there are no vaccuum leaks. After making sure to do all of this, then see if the car is doing the same thing and if it isn't then your egr is stuck. (it may seem like a lot of trouble but it shouldn't take very long to do.)

Yeah, but get to the EGR I'll have to remove the plenum. Is that a big deal ?

I'm assuming you have a TPI, not a TBI or carb. It's a bit more involved in TPI cars, you'll have to take off the plenum and at least one of the runners.

If it IS stuck, capping the EGR might not do anything.

Just disconnect the EGR solenoid by the distributor.
