Drilled hole in gas tank for 90 degree fuel fitting, now I can't run a muffler?

A while back, I bought a fuel tank sump from Competition Engineering to use with my camaro. Anyway, when I went to see how I was going to orient the sump, I found out that the contour on the bottom of the gas tank will not allow a fuel tank sump to be used. I had to come up with a better way. NOTE that I am using -8 AN fuel line from the tank to the pump, and then -6 AN from the pump to the carb. Anyway, I drilled a hole in the bottom of the gas tank where the baffles are and installed a fuel cell type bulkhead. I ran my -8 line with a fast flow 90 degree fuel fitting, and routed the fuel line as best as I could. After a few days, I got the engine running and stuff, but smelled that I had a gas leak. I round the leak at the back of the tank where the fitting is. I figured that I could just get another set of nylon washers and put them on both side of the tank to see if it would hold the gas in. Once I started to think about it, though, I realized that the location of where I put this fitting, is right where the muffler sits. And seeing as how I will be using the mufflex 4 inch exhaust system with a spintech muffler there is noooo way that the muffler will fit. So what do I do now? I can't use a sump, and a fuel cell is OUT OF THE QUESTION unless it will bolt in the factory location. The only company that I have seen that offers that is Fuel Safe, and they want $700 for it. Can the factory fuel pickup on the top of the tank be modified to flow like a -8 line? I'm very open to any ideas or suggestions you might have. This will work temporarily but I still need to find a way to get this right. Thanks for your help, Paul Moore

If I'm not mistaken the stock EFI pump outlet line is a 5/16", and the return is a 3/8" (6an) line. You can use the return for your pumps suction line, still that's a 6an.

Where is your pump located, got pictures? If they're not hosted, and you can't attach them here, email them to me.

The outlet of the tank is 3/8 and the return is 5/16. How much power are you making? A good intank pump should be able to handle quite a bit, just regulate it down with a return style regulator for your carb.

Well, I am using an Edelbrock mechanical pump that puts out 110 GPH at 7 psi(no regulator required). Everything in the tank has been gutted with the excepttion of the fuel level sender. I can take a picture of the setup when I get home from work tonight. I will probably have to end up using a radiused pump fitting with an AN pipe plug to plug the hole.

Oh and Lo-tec, I like the Better Off Dead line, that's a great movie!

I'm in the process of redoing my fuel system also. I used a competition engineering sump but had to shorten it slightly to fit the contours of the tank. I dropped the tank off to be coated and will pick it up monday morning...I can take a picture of it on monday if you want to see how the sump was welded on. The exhaust isn't an issue for me since I have true duals with turn downs before the rear axle.

You could probably have the sending unit modified to 1/2" pipe, but I would think it would be costly and it is a tight fit there. Earls makes fittings that go on the feed and return lines to allow running #6AN. They are made to correctly connect with the goofy o-ring ends. You could use one of those and step it up to #8AN and then run the #8 all the way to the carb. It looks like they have a bunch of different sizes including #8AN.

These are the correct ones for #6AN:

OK, here is a picture as promised of the fuel fitting location.

The engine is probably making about 475 HP. Here are 2 pictures of the Edelbrock mechanical pump with the bottom inlet/outlet adapter piece.

Please pardon the mess in the engine compartment. I am in the process of tidying up a bit and routing all of the wiring and hoses. Oh, and here is the third pic, my limit...

Why did you decide to go with the adapter?

Because there is no room where the inlet and outlets are on the original pump. If you look at the 2nd pic, you will see that the inlet fitting is obstructed by the subframe, and the outlet is right next to the block. I have tried several locations by rotating the bottom of the pump, and no positions will work for me. In the second pic, you can see some white stuff(which is teflon tape) at about the 8 o clock position on the outer edge of the pump body. That is the inlet. And exactly 180 degrees around the pump is the outlet.

Ugh, that's pretty irritating. I knew there was a reason I like Carter mechanical pumps better.

Well, what's funny is that the bottom piece that I used is designed for the 70-81 camaro because supposedly the subframe gets in the way of the pump inlet and outlet. Makes you wonder if they got the years mixed up......

More likely Edelbrock hasn't given the product a second glance since 1981.

OK guys, so what do you think? By looking at the location of the fitting in the first pic, do you think that any muffler will be able to fit there, or will I have to find a way to move the fuel feed line???

Looks a little tight for a conventional muffler. You could always run this from SLP:

No problem here. Had my local radiator shop do this, however I am no longer running a muffler back there.

You can Tee the stock supply & return lines of the stock sending unit into the 1/2" line and use the stock routing.
