What's Wrong with my Autometer Tach????

I just got a 5" autometer tach with shift lite. My brother installed it and it works great except for one thing. To set the lite the ignition has to be on and turn the dial. Well, the first time I went to use it the lite didn't go off, so I just shifted. I turned the car off and turned on the ignition to find the shift lite was changed to turn on at 6000 rpm's. Well today I turned the dial while driving and while the ignition was off, the needle doesn't move that corrects the lite, but however much I turned it amounted to where the lite would come on. Did my brother do something wrong in the installation. I was thinking maybe connecting a wire to something that was always hot.
