Diagnostic codes
Diagnostic codes
I just did the diagnostics test for my 86 ta and I got two codes. 45 and 53. In my chiltons book it shows 45 as a rich oxygen sensor....my first question is what does that mean?..about a week ago I replaced my o sensor. My next question is what is the 53 code?...I dont have it in my book and I did it twice to make sure it said 53... also when I had my car tested for smog it showed it had too much co2...the mechanic told me it was running rich and then told me the o2 sensor and egr solinoid were...I replaced both and im still getting these two codes.......I wanna get these two codes outta here and go have my car smogged...anyways thanks for any comments or suggestions.

Also if its any relivance, whenever my car is running and radio on, I get a crackiling sound through my speakers....it doesnt happen when my car is off and radio on, only when car is running..kinda strange but my idea is that some wire is crossed or off in the engine wiring....could this cause these two codes?

53. High voltage at battery OR
High voltage at exhaust gas recirculation valve OR
Voltage reference error OR
Problem at vehicle anti-theft system
Yeah basically the 45 means you are running rich, the 53 could be an EGR problem. The crackling could be interference from your ignition system, but I thought all resistor spark plugs nowadays had put an end to that. What kind of plugs are you using?
Lots of guys will give you tips here for passing emissions, like dry gas and such. Change your pcv valve, charcoal canister filter, spark plugs, etc. You may need to change your coolant temp sensors as well, these and the o2 sensor control when the car goes into closed loop.
Were your HC high? If so, you may wan't to check your smog pump, cat, and diverter valve. If your NOx are high you may need to check the EGR.
