Fuel Pump

GM/Carter Street Performance fuel pump PN 12355612.

I'm on my second one of these in about three weeks. Both leak oil out through the top.

When the first one was returned the parts supplier said that he'd got another one back with the same problem. Seems to be seal inside which becomes displaced.

They were OK for about 75 mile and then they started to leak.

Does anyone know if there's a recognized problem with these things - like a bad productin run or something.

Mine had to be clocked to get it to fit but I don't think that's the problem.

Is oil draining properly in your block?

It's a new motor - it should be draining properly? and there was a third pump returned with the same problem

Does anyone know if indexing the pump will screw these things up?? As far as I know it shouldn't.

There may be something wrong with your block. Oil in the fuel pump mounting area comes down from the cam around the fuel pump pushrod and usually drains into the pan quickly enough that there isn't usually enough oil in the area for all that much to accumulate in the pump. Where is it leaking from, exactly?

The vent hole. It's not leaking a lot but it is leaking.

There isn't supposed to be enough oil in there for it to even be getting to the vent hole.

Right. But there's a seal inside that was displaced on the first pump. Another was returned to the supplier with the same problem and I'm guessing we will find that this pump has a displaced seal as well.

However, the question of whether or not the block is draining properly is a good one. How do you test that?? apart from looking for the obvious obstruction of some sort.

That would be about the only way I could think to do it.

I'm going to change this one again and if it doesn't work I'll try a Holly or something; if that doesn't work I'll drive the car into a wall at 120mph.

By the way, the wall around Toronto is almost completed and your associates in the West can start filling it with oil any time soon..lol

Why waste perfectly good oil?
